Laurin, Isaac

(died 30 April 1914, aged 69), veterinarian. (I. Laurin) Born at St-Joseph, Que. No information has come to light about his professional training. During the last 30 years of his life he was a resident of Alexandria, where he and his wife and family arrived in 1884, and presumably during the whole of that long time he was a practising veterinarian. In printed sources he is usually referred to as Mr Laurin, rather than Dr Laurin. Probably, like most Ontario veterinarians of the time, he had no degree. However, one may guess that among the GC farmers who employed him as a veterinarian he would have been known as Dr Laurin, by the custom of the time for identifying veterinarians. He was married in 1868, at Ste-Marthe, Que., to Eloise Joanette, who was born at St-Eustache, Que., in Feb. 1852. (eight children surviving him) Their children included Alcide, Anthime (William), E. Leo, J. Hector and J. Albert Laurin, all of this dictionary, and they were the grandparents of Wilfred E. Crateau. The sons William and J. Albert were Glengarry News employees at the time of Isaac’s death, and all six of the descendants named here had newspaper associations. Six years before her death, Isaac Laurin’s widow moved from Alexandria to Cornwall, Ont., where she died on 7 Oct. 1930, aged 78. The funeral services for Mr and Mrs Laurin were at the Sacred Heart Church, Alexandria, with burial in St. Finnan’s cemetery.
