McDonell, Angus
(died 4 Feb. 1890, aged 96), early settler of Alexandria. (Col. Angus Macdonell) Born in Scotland. Educated at Inverness, Scotland. He came from Inverness-shire to GC at a date which has been given both as 1821 and 1826. He was possibly one of the teachers Bishop Macdonell brought to Canada from Scotland. His family settled on Lot 6, in the 3rd Concession of Kenyon Township. At St. Raphael’s 29 Nov. 1826, he was married to Amelia Dewar, who was born in Montreal May 1812, and who died 25 Feb. 1877. He was a teacher. He was presumably the Angus McDonell of Alexandria, schoolmaster, who petitioned in 1828 to buy Lot 3 in the 3rd Concession of Kenyon Township. He served in the militia, and is said to have been a militia captain in 1837. In 1875, he became a lt.-col. in the Reserve Militia, Regimental Division of Glengarry. The previous holder of the position was the Hon. Donald A. Macdonald, who probably vacated the position in connection with his having become lieutenant-governor of Ontario. Remarkably, McDonell was about 80 years old when he became lieutenant-colonel.
Commonly known by the Colonel title, he is named as “Col. Angus McDonell” on his gravestone. For over 30 years, he was treasurer of Kenyon Twp. and also was school inspector. He owned, and presumably farmed, 100 acres in Lot 6, 3rd of Kenyon. He died at Alexandria, three children surviving him. He and his wife are buried in St. Finnan’s cemetery, Alexandria. He was one of two Col. Angus Macdonells important in 19th-century Alexandria. For the other, see the entry immediately preceding the present one.
