Sonne, Edward Leyland
(17 Jan. 1920-14 Dec. 1994), artist. (Ted Sonne) Born at Lachine, Que. Parents: Dean Leyland Sonne and his wife Elizabeth North. He was educated at St. Lambert High School, Monument Nationale, Montreal, and École des Beaux-Arts, Montreal. During WWII, he served for 5 years overseas with the Royal Canadian Artillery. At Lachine, Que., on 9 Nov. 1946, he was married to Kathryn Carre. Sonne worked as a commercial artist for Canada Post, and retired aged 65. Having previously lived at St. Lambert, Lachine and Chateauguay, Que., he moved to Green Valley, GC, in 1975. In his retirement in GC he followed painting (landscapes and portraits) and woodcarving. Sonne died in Ottawa General Hospital, following an accident in moving a boulder on his property at Green Valley. (three children) In 1994 he won the Cooper Marsh Conservation Authority’s artist of the year award with a watercolour showing two wood ducks in flight. (Glengarry News 6 April 1994, with portrait of Sonne) Called “Protected Flight,” the watercolour was afterwards published for fund-raising purposes by the Cooper Marsh Conservation Authority as an impressive and delicately-tinted poster and postcard. Some of his paintings are at Glengarry Memorial Hospital and Cornwall Regional Gallery. His portraits include one of Nobel Villeneueve, MLA. Ted Sonne’s widow died 2 March 2006 at Glengarry Memorial Hospital, Alexandria, aged 81. (her obituary, GN 8 March 2006)
