Stephenson, James P.
(16 July 1872-16 Jan. 1973), river boat man. (Capt. Stephenson) Not a Glengarrian, but on the “fringes” of the GC story. Born near Avonmore, Stormont County. Parents: William Stephenson and his wife Elizabeth Hough. Setting out in the work world at 16, he worked for many years on the St. Lawrence River, rising from deckhand to captain. He was captain altogether of 11 ships (mostly passenger ships), including the Rapids King, Rapids Queen and Rapids Prince. He is reported to have made at least 1300 trips as pilot and master through the Long Sault Rapids west of Cornwall which, until they were destroyed in the building of the St. Lawrence Seaway, were one of the scenic glories of Ontario. Retired from 1934, he lived in retirement at the family home near Avonmore. On 25 Jan. 1970 while he and his wife were in hospital in Cornwall, their house near Avonmore, with its mementos of the captain’s long career on the St. Lawrence, “was mysteriously destroyed by fire.” (Glengarry News 29 Jan. 1970, & obituary) Thereafter, he was a resident at St. Joseph’s Villa, Cornwall. He died at Cornwall General Hospital, aged 100. He was married (children surviving him: 3) to (1) Isabel Hart, and (2) Jennie Brown. Anglican.
