Matheson, Donald Charnock

(28 Aug. 1890-26 March 1973), university teacher. (Matty Matheson, Dr Matheson) Born in GC. Parents: Rev. John Matheson and his wife Christy Ann Elizabeth McNaughton. He attended Queen’s University (Bachelor of Medicine, 1915), and obtained the medical qualification also L.R.C.P. and S. Often described as Dr Charnock, he does not seem actually to have taken a doctor’s degree. In 1915 he joined the staff of the Dept. of Anatomy at Queen’s and he served there till he retired in 1957, obtaining in that dept. the rank of assistant professor, 1920, professor and acting head, 1925, and head, 1927. Altogether, he was head of the dept. for some 30 years. In 1919-1920 he was acting medical superintendent in charge of intern service at the Kingston General Hospital. After retiring from Queen’s, he acted as a visiting lecturer in anatomy at the University of Saskatchewan. He died at St. Mary’s Hospital, Kingston. He was buried in the cemetery of his father’s church, the Round Church, Dalhousie Mills, GC. He appears to have been unmarried. At Queen’s, a medical scholarship was established in his honour. And in another honour at Queen’s, the Matheson Club Room (officially opened in 1958) in Etherington Hall at Queen’s was named after him.
