Whyte, Paul
(1832-30 Oct. 1905), station agent. Born at Kilrane, County Wexford, Ireland. In his earlier years he worked in Australia, taking part in setting up the telegraph system. Afterwards, he was station agent for the Grand Trunk Railway at Lancaster, GC, for nearly 35 years. He was married to Elizabeth Defoe (1837-1 Feb. 1919). (six children) He is said to have taken his son C.P. Whyte out of school at an early age to learn telegraphy and the other work of a station agent, with a view to having the young man succeed him as station agent. At any rate, C. P. Whyte did succeed his father, and the two, father and son, were station agents at Lancaster over a period of close to 90 years. Paul Whyte died at his home in Lancaster. Paul Whyte was the father of Mrs Clara Whyte-Edgar. One of his sons, Dr John J. Whyte (1869-1927) was a McGill graduate in medicine; he served in the U. S. Medical Corps in the Spanish-American War and in the Canadian Army in WWI, and at the time of his death in an auto acccident was a physician in North Dakota.
